National Donut Day started out since 1938 as a fund raising activity for Chicago’s Salvation Army to help the needy during the Great Depression and also to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I who served doughnuts to soldiers behind the front lines in France and since then National Doughnut Day was celebrated as an annual event.
