How to Reduce, Prevent, Combat Spam
The world wide web has given us so many good things but is also given us a few not so good things and one of those things is SPAM. Spam isn’t limited to email chains, and let’s admit it, that we are all guilty of sending it to friends and family members. Many of us feel that receiving email spam is a burden and that we are tasked to clean our inbox out daily. Everyone get spammed and we all hate it, right?. Some people are being targeted ferociously, specially those with their own domains, receiving hundreds per day. Did you know that 40% of emails that are sent daily are Spam? It is frustrating, annoying and sometimes a very serious problem for some people. It can also be dangerous because some messages sent are with viruses and Trojans which can be a tool to steal your personal information.
Do you also knew that the spammers buy a lists of email addresses from a list broker? If your email address appeared on a website, in a newsgroup postings, on an online service’s membership directory, or in a chat room it is very possible that your email address may find its way onto the brokers lists. The spammers uses these special software that can send hundreds of thousands or even millions of email messages to the addresses in just a click of a mouse.
Deleting Spams is a waste of time and money, it is something we shouldn’t have to do, right?. But it is worth using a software to combat it? There are so many types of Anti-Spam on the market but who knows which is best. Buying the most expensive doesn’t guarantee that spamming is over.
Though completely ridding off spam from your life may be an impossible task, there are steps you can take to reduce receiving it.
• Do not open Spam or Attachments in a Spam email, if you do, you are at risk of infecting your machine with viruses and Trojans.
• Create a separate email address, like Gmail and Hotmail, when registering for an online group or Web-newsletter.
• Do NOT click the unsubscribe link, this just confirms to them your email address is correct.
• When posting content on a website, don’t include your primary email address. Spammers can easily add you to their lists.
• Use different email accounts for different purposes for example, one for work one for your personal life and one for online shopping.
• Trick the spam spiders. If you post an email address online, disguise it’s setup, spelling out ‘dot com’ instead of .com
• DO NOT display your email address in public. That includes newsgroup postings, chat rooms, websites or in an online service’s membership directory
• If you sign up for a list, be sure it’s for that sole site and your information is confidential..
• Check the privacy policy when you submit your address to a website.
• Read text only emails or request your mail provider to notify you before downloading images or HTML.
• If you receive forwarded chain emails from friends or family, ask them to stop. Even if you trust who is sending you the email, your name will still be visible to whoever continues sending the chain.
• Use an email filter. Check your email account to see if it provides a tool to filter out potential spam or a way to channel spam into a bulk email folder. Or buy an email filter.
We have to be all aware of the dangers of leaving our personal information on other websites, forums or chat rooms and other newsgroups. Using spam filters is one of the many ways to fight the spammers and I would recommend we all use one.![]()

joyce, u hit the bull’s eye my dear. spams and spammers are no less than viruses – they’re annoying, unhealthy and destructive. worst, they replicate.
i’ve had my share of spams, this time in my blog… i just installed a nofollow plugin and after an hour, spams came rushing in (14 to be exact). it’s a big headache so i just disabled my nofollow plugin… i don’t know but there must be a technology spammers use… maybe when they determine that ur blog uses a nofollow script, they automatically send spam comments which is truly virus-like…

great info on spam joyce. I though I knew everything about spam, hindi pala.
I have several email accounts that I use for different purposes but they’re all yahoo. though I have a gmail account I seldom use it. mas convenient kasi for me to use yahoo kahit na dami nga nakakalusot na spam.

ok ang yahoo pero complicated na for me lalo na ng mag beta but i still prefer to use to first one, but when it comes to filtering mas ok ang gmail.

OMG, i’ve just learned to ignore it..
I use both Gmail and Hotmail, and they’re pretty good at filtering, but some does still get thru.
My wife has learned (the hard way), that sending or receiving all of those cute “online greeting cards” is one of the worst ways to get on every spammer in the world’s spam-list..
at least if a ever need some viagra, I’ll know where to get it online.. for cheap!
