Vote for Tubbataha Reef on New 7 Wonders Dot Com
Tubbataha Reef, Asia’s best marine park with 96,000 hectares, it is a reef ecosystem in the middle of Sulu Sea, has been nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders. Along with hundreds of other natural attractions across the continents Tubbataha have been selected and officially recognized last July 2007.
An environmental advocate Alex Marcaida urged Filipinos to vote and give Tubbataha a chance to make it to the top 21 finalist in the reputable search for the seven new wonders. Tubbataha’s underwater world of wonders is one of best few places on earth and it’s worth voting for.
Nominees like Christ Redeemer of Brazil, Chichen Itza of Mexico, Taj Mahal of India, Colosseum of Italy, Petra of Jordan, Machu Picchue of Peru and Great Wall of China have already accumulated a million votes to represent their heritage throughout history.
Tubbataha declared as World Heritage Site by the UNESCO since 1993. Last year it generated about P4 million pesos from tourism. The reef is located 182 km southeast from the city. The home for the 483 species of fish, 10,000 coral reefs, 2 species of marine turtles and 9 species of marine mammals. The reef’s island are the breeding ground for the seabirds across Southeast Asia.
Park manager Angelique Songco said that the tourism income will be used for the conservation, monitoring, researching and other expenses needed annually and that would cost at about P10 million. The Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Navy and other officers in Western Command are helping Tubbataha’s conservation through logistic support and manpower. Tubbataha as reported has a contributed ecological value of P840 million every year in the country’s economy in terms of tourism and fisheries.

hi joanjoyce! thanks for this reminder! we really need to rally behind this cause =]
just a clarification perhaps: the New Seven Wonders of the World- the ones which replaced yung Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Lighthouse at Pharos, etc have already been named last 07.07.07, at ito yung binanggit mo sa itaas na Chichen Itza, Christ the Redeemer, Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Great Wall, Petra, at Machu Picchu. Tubbataha is not competing against them- winners na yung pitong iyon.
Tubbataha IS competing to be included sa list of New Seven Wonders of Nature, where it is currently ranked, you are correct, no. 33, according to the new7wonders.com as of today. Ang kalaban nya rito ay ang mga tulad ng Bora Bora island sa Pacific, Ganges River sa India, Mt Everest, Mt Fuji, Niagara Falls, etc.
But the fact remains- go vote na tayo sa new7wonders.com woot woot
