Blogging: A SLACKER JOB according to Malu Fernandez
Woke up around 7am to do some breakfast for my daughter who is having her final exams today. After sending her to school, as I do my usual stuff online, found an email via contact form and it is from sis Annie. It is about her asking me if I know the latest buzz about Malu Fernandez and that she had a post about it.
Malu Fernandez became popular to me is when she made such an elitist, discriminative, irresponsible comment about our fellow OFW, which is also, I believe, like her a Filipino. Then afterwards made her self resigned, apologized, then I believe went back to work and now is making herself controversial again.
Now Ms. Fernandez called blogging as a “SLACKER JOB or a medium and pastime for lonely people to connect”.
By Malu Fernandez
Just this morning I got a text telling me to check out some blog with juicy gossip about the so called “Gucci Gang” curiously enough I logged on and read all the gossip and juicy details. Whether or not the stories were true I didn’t really care to find out nor do I care to be involved. It makes no difference in my life who did what to whom it was just a leisure gossip read and I was just one of the many people who read the blog but halfway through I became quite disturbed as it made me reminiscent of the numerous blogs I was once the hot topic of.
Before I go any further I must stress the point that this is not about my previous issue, but simply the point of view of someone who has been a victim of vicious blogging and blogging as a new communication medium. To those of you who are mass/volume or dense (that’s the physics formula for density to those who are clueless) again, I repeat this is not a reaction toward my past actions.
So let me continue, first of all I believe in the freedom of speech. By all means say what you need to say. Unfortunately for most of the bloggers without advertising you get paid nothing. If in fact you do get paid then hooray for you. But blogging, aside from Perez Hilton and the other big time bloggers (you know who you are) is for me a slacker job or a medium and pastime for lonely people to connect. Unless you’re in bloody Siberia or in a Gulag prison, try stepping outside your comfort zone and turn off the laptop or pc, you just might find some real live people to talk to instead of typing away in cyber space.
On the flipside blogging can be a good source of information and a great way to exchange ideas. This I strongly encourage whether it is about politics, fashion, food or whatever topic you may choose. Friendly and healthy discussions are always great.
The difference between a journalist and a blogger is that journalists have to adhere to certain guidelines that govern the freedom of speech. And whatever a journalist chooses to write about—be it popular or unpopular—we do not hide behind an anonymous name and are resigned to the fact that we have to take as much as we dish out. However, I simply detest people who place vicious comments and slanderous statements in blogs yet sign their messages as ‘anonymous.’ If you have something to say, don’t hide behind a false name. It’s just plain cowardice of you to do so. I have more of a deep sense of respect for those—however unpopular or vicious their statements are—who post their views with their real names and make no bones about it. At least they stand for something; I would rather take it from them than the cowards that hide behind false names.
Perhaps it is the Filipino culture to foster backstabbing because they never mean what they say face to face. Just how many times have you dealt with co-workers who will smile in your face when you ask them to perform a task or engage in just plain conversation, when in fact they are quite uncomfortable with the situation and are forced to do what they absolutely detest with a smiling face. I guess it’s the kind of culture brought about by 300 years of Spanish colonization. To one particular blogger of Spanish descent but with an Indio face, don’t act like a peninsulares and quote Spanish words from the generation of your abuelita… jeez and they call me elitist. The Spanish rule is over, get over yourself and your Español relatives who used to have power… but I digress (oops, my bad…) Let’s move forward.
It’s just like all this hullabaloo about ousting GMA. You deposed ERAP in Edsa Dos. Now you’re unhappy with his replacement. Make up your minds. (For the record I’m not pro anybody I’m pro whatever lesser evil is out there). You can’t overthrow one president then decide you made a mistake with your second choice. I’s not like buying a green Hermes bag and suddenly deciding, oops I should have gotten the black one instead. Unfortunately that’s the kind of nation we have become, a bunch of wishy-washy whiners who whine about everything under the sun and found the blog sphere to be the new medium for whining. Yes we do what we have to do as a nation to get things done and stop corruption and evil (I’m all for that) but we never seem to be happy with what we have, hence the complaining and whining. It just never stops.
I suppose I started some kind of trend by eliciting nasty comments and reactions via blog because of my indiscretion. But it seems to be a comfortable medium for people to vent their anger on just about everything they disagree with. I have been called an irresponsible journalist so what does that make you? It is easy to hide under the guise of anonymity you can say just about anything you want because you have no repercussions to deal with. It’s easy to hide behind a false moniker isn’t it?
Just a thought to ponder on… Maybe I should start an anonymous blog and really let go… but then again I don’t want to be responsible for World War Three and I would sleep much better being brutally honest in your face than hide behind an anonymous name. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I started a blog just to shake things up and got a ton of money in advertising? If I do decide to do that I thank you all in advance for inspiring me… I’m always a glass half full kinda girl anyway…
I don’t believe on your comparison to journalist and bloggers, “The difference between a journalist and a blogger is that journalists have to adhere to certain guidelines that govern the freedom of speech.” I don’t think you practice that certain guidelines on being a journalist, because your bad mouth strikes again. Plus you ain’t be as popular as today if not because of the slackers your trying to describe on your article.
And whats wrong with the Anonymous authors on blogs? Even a popular magazine, tabloid, newspaper have an anonymous writer too, even on radio some isn’t using their real name, Joe the Mango, Mr. Romantiko, Bubwit etc. I think you are being “AGAIN” unfair here.
The real difference between a blogger and a lifestyle columnist like you is that we do not have a boss and we are read worldwide. Unlike you, a columnist? a social climber? in a group who adheres to a certain guidelines?
Now fellow bloggers speak up? She’s back!!!

March 12th, 2008 at 2:35 am
me point xa sa sinasabi niya… but it’s just not right that we are compared to the journalists. i’m a journalists at school, and a blogger here on the internet, and these two occupations aren’t just right to be compared as they’re different.
i guess she’s being like Britney Spears: she’s making a buzz just so to gain fame. the only difference between Britney and her is that Britney takes herself down (whether accidentally or intentionally) to be talked about while that Malu thingy enjoys fame by taking people around her down. she’s “eevviill”…
Malu, what do you call yourself? A heroine? A great writer? A moving writer? You’re just controversial, and just that. In fact, I’ve only known you now, which means you’re not somebody at all, at least for me…
You get what you give, and that’s exactly what you are reaping now because of your filthy mouth.
I suggest you just let the people around you do what they enjoy to do…

I agree, complaining and whining just never stops. and i commend her bravery for making articles such as this.
I also believed her wit is not understood by many, although it will be better if she will not use words that ordinary, or less understanding people, can understand.
but connecting the ‘whining and complaining of bloggers’ by citing the politics in our country as an example is a bit out of the context.
And what’s wrong with “slacker”? She’s making it a big deal. If we are in the northern hemisphere, then maybe we should be bothered by it because it means ‘underachiever’, but since we are here in the Philippines, we use the word in its original form as a person who avoids physical work. Lol, its a bit hard to admit, but its true. It doesn’t mean to say bloggers are ‘tamad’, but she used it in a way that sounded like that, thus, putting readers bursting out, again.
But, blogging as a ‘pastime for lonely people to connect’ is really out of the line.
Haha, i don’t have a say on this issue.

To write in anonymous identity – I’m also against this..
Consider Blogging as Slacker Job – slack is synonymously to term relaxed, I take this term positively.. I’ve been working in an IT company wherein I have to finsih my projects whether my physical condition can still sustain it or not.. My point is, call blogging as slacker job but it sounds good for me kasi by just pinching buttons on your keyboard you earn money.. To Malu Fernandez don’t you see this as an advantage? To ate Joyce, let’s take this in the lighter side..
Journalists vs. Bloggers – Don’t mislead us.. I hate anonymous writers too who had no other intentions but to harm.. But believe me, there are also journalist who hide under unknown entities.. And you must be lying if you don’t admit this..
Final Words
I think Malou Fernadez you should not generalize at all.. Be laser targeted on your points. There’s nothing wrong in expressing yourself but then again, hit it in a particular perspective..

yes, slacker is not negative per se but thats what she is trying to define in her post. That bloggers are “tamad”. Another is she generalized it. The points are true, yes, but not to all. And maybe she is doing it for a purpose, to what it is? Maybe she wants traffic, lol!

The only reason why people bother to comment (read criticize) blogging – is because it has reach critical mass (physics din yun – baka clueless din sya). But really it’s as old as the Fidonet (for those old enough to know BBS) or Usenet – for those fortunate enough to know what soc.culture.filipino is. People express their opinion in all shape, size and form – and although you could actually step out and meet real people and talk to them – the medium of blogging has its place.
People write their thoughts – what can be more beautiful than that. They interact with the rest of the world almost real time – something that was just introduced in our lifetime – surely you’d like to embrace that.

she has a point in some of the issues she raised. I just didn’t like her condescending attitude towards bloggers. just because she’s a journalist doesn’t mean she’s better.
about the whining, I have to admit there are SOME bloggers out there who do this all the time. all they do is complain and criticize, just like the people in the forums. but we have a lot of excellent bloggers as well, those who write from the heart and not just the brain, those who analyze issues, those who introduce new ideas, etc. there are good eggs and bad eggs in both baskets so to speak.
malu fernandez writes well, I just don’t like the ATTITUDE behind her writings.
if she ever starts her own blog, I’m sure she’ll get plenty of traffic, but for all the wrong reasons (READ: HATE COMMENTS!)
March 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I received this story from an email days ago. I never bothered to write about her since I never been interested with her rants in the first place. Yet I have two opposing views about her article.
1. she has all the right to rant because everyone is free to do so.
2. she has no idea what being a blogger is all about, neitherr pro or passion bloggers.
I have so many blogfriends that went pro (including you joan), but I never criticized them for earning from what they write. It’s a legal and moral way of renumeration and I think anyone who works his/her ass off should have all the right in the world to be compensated.
She pampers her whims and caprices by writing and socializing with other party crazy cyborgs, is she different from pro bloggers? both are just earning a living out of their sweat by writing, So this malu fernandez is obviously an attention deficit neurotic. Ignore her, people who craves for attention just wants a piece of traffic.

The first time she did that I was really fuming because I have friends working abroad (OFW) not by choice but by need. Now she is targeting us bloggers and commenter’s alike.
I suggest for her to try blogging. Go ahead, give it a try! Who knows, by some miracle, THAT blog might become a hit and get lots of “paying” advertisers. That way, it’ll find out that blogging is not just a “slacker job or a medium and pastime for lonely people to connect.” By the revenues the blog will generate, IT might even have enough to buy a business class or even a first class ticket the next time IT decides to waddle back to GREECE with all the GREASE.
She is taunting us bloggers to give her another 15 minutes of fame. She had a taste and now she wants more. Shall we give it to her? I say “Nay!”
