Identity Theft: Protect Your Identity Online
Have you ever thought of what if someone is playing you? Yes it is possible. There are so many ways on how a person can steal your identity online. The wide usage of the internet has made this stealing much easier to do.
How? Here are some possible ways that a criminal can steal your identity, so BEWARE!
Software. Have a good anti-virus program on your computer to prevent malicious programs from damaging your computer or prevent them from installing programs that can monitor your activity. You can also install anti-phishing toolbar, firewall and other security programs to protect you.
Downloading. When you are downloading any software or add-ons make sure that you are protected with an updated anti-virus program. If you don’t update your anti-virus regularly, you’ll never know what you’ve downloaded until you extract it and install it. It is also better to download on websites who offer goodies that have been scanned already by them for malware and viruses.
Email. This is the most easiest way to steal your personal information. Someone might trick you from sending an email having a link from PayPal, eBay, from your bank or credit card company asking you to login. This trick is called phishing, it is a disguised link that if your a newbie you’ll never know its the wrong site. Once you submit your information, you already lost your identity. The criminal already has your information and will use it until you loose everything what is there. It is better not to click on email links specially when it has to submit personal information. It is wise to manually login to check if the email is legitimate or not. Do not open email attachments unless you have scanned it already and if your using Internet Explorer, update it regularly, it has an anti-phishing capabilities were it will tell you if you are in a fake site.
Credit Cards. Check with your credit card provider for any identity theft protection available. The best credit card company is the once who offer protection when the purchases becomes malicious and that an unauthorized purchases would not be charged from you. Choose a credit card company who offers virtual credit card numbers, for this numbers are for one transaction made only so that a possible theft could not re-use it again. When doing an online shopping it is better to use one credit card only, so that you can easily monitor your expenses and other suspicious transactions.
If you think that you lost some vital informations, just immediately report it to the authorities so that the usage of your identity will stop and no possible fraud can be done.
Identity theft is one of the most evil types of crimes that exist online. It happens when a person stole another person’s information. Some might just steal all the money you have in your bank account or paypal account. But some of this criminal will also use the stolen information to use the victim’s identity to do a crime again with the victims information at stake. The criminal has the ability to use the victim’s data, like to open new bank accounts, passport, create credit card and charge accounts, apply for loans and other government benefits and licenses.
This is a really really serious crime, we have to be vigilant about it because we’ll never know when it will hit you. You’ll never know maybe a chatmate, textmate or a caller is a possible criminal.
