Manila Ocean Park
This December, Manila will experience this awesome attraction. Young and old alike will surely enjoy the coming of the Ocean Park just behind the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.
According to Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong, this P1-billion project, is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China.
Lim said the concept of the park would be an oceanarium, a mall, a boutique hotel, a restaurant row and open marine habitats, where marine enthusiasts could learn to swim and dive with the fishes. Singaporean together with Malaysian investors is the first world class marine park to adopt a fusion concept. The park will house the first and largest aquarium facility in the Philippines.
Manila Ocean Park would be among the most advanced ocean parks in Asia, with an area larger than the famous Sentosa oceanarium in Singapore. Lim said that the oceanarium and the open marine habitats would contain 12,000 cubic meters of seawater which features 300 marine species found in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Robert Dean Barbers, PTA general manager says, “All over the world, people have been saying that our country is the center of marine biodiversity, this is the time to be proud and show the world what we have”.
The project is composed of three phases, the oceanarium which will be opened to the public by December. The second, is the marine themed mall and a hotel, the third would be the marine habitats, and would be open to the public by next year.
The oceanarium journey is divided into six sections. The first section, called Agos (Flow), features a rainforest theme with eight tanks containing freshwater species. The next section, called Bahura or the Reef, would exhibit artificial corals in 48 tanks, Laot (Fishing Ground), would feature big fish and Eagle spotted rays in a long tank. The main attraction of the oceanarium is a 25 meter long walkway tunnel with 220 degree curved acrylic walls. A school of barracudas would be seen swimming in a large tank at the Kalaliman (The Deep) section of the oceanarium. There would also be a shark tank and an overhead aquarium featuring the breathtaking beauty of rays.
Manila Ocean Park would not include endangered and protected species like the whale sharks and other sea mammals. A group of marine biologists and scientists has been working to ensure that the types of fish could live well together with each other in the tanks.
The entrance fee would cost P350-P400 and P250 for students.
Parks vice president, Cristina Romualdez says, “We are largely an educational facility. As much as possible, we want to promote the conservation and preservation of marine species”.
I Say. This is something to be proud of, another tourist spot from the Philippines. Not everyone can afford to travel and I say I am happy that Filipino kids and adults too will now experience a world class theme park. Aside from that, the project would increase the peso from dollars coming from tourist, can create more jobs and would decrease our growing unemployed population. News says that the government will earn P20M annually for rentals. I am really excited about it, imagine going to oceanarium and coming face to face with a shark or even a school barracudas. bahura, akala ko basura, featuring mga basura sa manila bay
this is good news in a way. kulang talaga ang pinas sa mga world-class attractions. tapos, sana makatulong ito para maka-educate ng mga tao towards conservation – starting with manila bay, syempre.
thanks for sharing the info, joan

hi galing kami ocean park kahapon. P400 entrance sa adult then children 4.5ft and below is P350. Walang discount sa student at pagkatapos ng tour di pwede re-entry. Merong kainan sa loob. It takes us 1hr and a half to finish the tour. Construction still going on di pa talaga tapos. Parang pinilit lang nila iopen oceanarium. But it’s worth naman.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:36 am

March 8th, 2008 at 1:26 am
manila ocean park is privately owned and operated by china oceanis philippines. it’s not a government project, so di naman na-corrupt ang budget.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:28 am
yes but any investor cannot do their project w/o doing all the paperworx 1st, so andon ang corruption

I haven’t been to the MOP yet as I plan to go visit when things have calmed down a bit …. lesser crowd and HOPEFULLY more courteous staff as what I have read from the post of remzamora in http://www.ourawesomeplanet.com/awesome/2007/11/manilaoceanpark.html.
I too have seen the oceanarium in HK and even the gigantic oceanariums in the U.S. Yes, I agree that the fishes in the Tunnel are small fish as compared to the ones I have seen overseas based from most of the photographs and videos of the MOP online.
However, the one BIG thing that disappoints me and is very noticeable even in the photographs and videos is the design and seascaping of the aquarium interior. I was hoping to see a more natural effect …. one that mimics the naturalness and natural look of the ocean floor. What I mean here is that in the photos, I can clearly see objects that are man-made structures. The drain on the flooring of the aqaurium inside the tunnel is so clearly visible. In some aquariums, I can see man-made, objects like a ship steering wheel inside … I am aware that the designers are trying to add some sort of “seascaping” (as opposed to landscaping) but those man-made decors becomes more of a distraction to the naturalness of the seaquarium instead of enhancing it. I think that the interior designers of the seaquariums should adopt a more natural and more calming look to their seascaping effort.
